What does hydraulic repair cost?
There is no list price for hydraulic work, and any site that gives you one is guessing. The price is set by which component failed, whether it can be fixed on site or has to come to a bench, whether a seal kit exists for it, whether the ram needs machining, and how quickly you need the machine earning again. Tell us about the machine and the fault, and hydraulic repair specialists will quote you their actual price.
PUWER 1998
hydraulic systems on plant are work equipment: they must be maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair
6 or 12 months
LOLER thorough examination intervals where the hydraulics are part of lifting equipment, unless an examination scheme sets different ones
No fixed interval
UK law sets no statutory replacement age for hydraulic hoses: condition, duty cycle and the maker's guidance decide when they come off

What drives a hydraulic repair quote, 2026
Last updated
We do not publish a price list for hydraulic work, because an honest one cannot exist: the same fault on two machines can differ by an order of magnitude depending on the component, the parts situation and how the engineer has to get to it. What we can publish is the list of things that actually move the number, and the question to ask so the quote you get is comparable with the next one.
This is a cost driver table, not a price table. Each row is a factor UK hydraulic repair firms price against when they quote, with the question that makes competing quotes comparable. No monetary figures are stated because we have no verifiable public price data for hydraulic repair, and a made-up range would be worse than none. | Cost driver | Why it moves the price | What to ask for on the quote |
|---|---|---|
| Which component failed | A hose assembly is made up from stock while you wait. A cylinder is stripped, inspected and rebuilt. A pump or valve may be a unit replacement with a long lead time. These are different orders of work, not different sizes of the same job. | A line each for parts and labour, so you can see which one you are actually paying for |
| On site or in the workshop | Mobile work carries travel, a callout element and an engineer working in mud or at height with only what is on the van. A bench strip in a lit workshop with a press to hand is quicker per hour and usually cheaper per job. | Whether the price assumes a mobile visit, and what the travel and callout element is |
| Seal kit availability | If the maker's kit is on a shelf, a cylinder rebuild is routine. If the kit is obsolete, seals have to be sourced individually or made, which turns a same-day job into a project. | Whether the kit is genuine, aftermarket or being made up seal by seal, and the lead time |
| Machining: honing, re-chroming, rod straightening | A scored bore or a pitted, bent or worn chrome rod cannot be fixed with seals. Honing the tube, grinding and re-chroming a rod, or making a new rod is specialist machining time and often subcontracted. | A written strip and inspection report before any machining is authorised |
| Fluid contamination and system flushing | Contaminated oil is the usual reason components fail, and the usual reason a rebuilt one fails again. Flushing the system, replacing filters and refilling with the right grade is real time and real oil volume. | Whether flushing, filters and fresh oil are in the price or extra, and how many litres |
| Downtime urgency | A machine stopped mid-job is a different commercial problem from a planned repair. Out of hours attendance, overnight courier for parts and jumping the workshop queue are all chargeable, and worth it if the machine is holding up a site. | The price for the normal lead time and the price for the fast one, side by side |
| Hose count, spec and routing | Hose price follows length, pressure rating, fitting type and how many are being replaced at once. A buried or awkwardly routed hose costs more in access time than the assembly itself. | Whether the spec matches the original pressure rating, and the access time assumed |
- Hydraulic systems fitted to plant and machinery are work equipment under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, so they must be maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair (HSE).
- UK law sets no statutory replacement interval for hydraulic hoses. Hoses are wear items, and condition, duty cycle and the manufacturer's guidance decide when they are changed, not a fixed age.
- Where hydraulic equipment is lifting equipment, LOLER thorough examinations are normally every 6 months for lifting accessories and equipment used to lift people, and every 12 months for other lifting equipment, unless an examination scheme drawn up by a competent person specifies otherwise (HSE).

Frequently asked
How much does hydraulic repair cost in the UK?
There is no meaningful single figure, because a hose made up over a counter and an obsolete piston pump rebuild are both hydraulic repair. The price is set by which component failed, whether the work is mobile or on a bench, whether seal kits and parts are available, whether the ram needs machining, and how urgently you need the machine back. Get quotes for your actual machine and fault.
Is it cheaper to repair hydraulics on site or in a workshop?
Workshop work is usually cheaper per job, because there is no travel or callout element and the engineer has a press, a bench and a test rig to hand. Mobile work is priced higher for good reasons, and is still the right answer when the machine cannot move or the downtime costs more than the difference.
Do hydraulic repairs have to be done by a qualified engineer?
Hydraulic systems on machinery are work equipment under PUWER 1998, and the HSE is clear that maintenance work should only be carried out by people competent to do it, with adequate information, instruction and training. For high risk or complex equipment that often points to the manufacturer or a specialist contractor. There is no single national licence, so ask about the firm's experience with your type of machine.
How often should hydraulic hoses be replaced?
UK law sets no fixed replacement interval for hydraulic hoses. They are wear items, and replacement is driven by condition and by the machine manufacturer's guidance: cracked or chafed covers, weeping crimps, kinks, blisters, corroded fittings or damage at the ferrule all mean replace. What the law does require is that the equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair.
What causes most hydraulic component failures?
Fluid contamination. Dirt, water and debris in the oil are the dominant cause of wear and failure in pumps, valves and cylinders, which is why filter changes, flushing after a failure and keeping the reservoir sealed matter more to the running cost of a machine than almost anything else.
Do hydraulic rams on lifting equipment need a LOLER examination?
Where the equipment is lifting equipment, LOLER thorough examination applies to the equipment as a whole. HSE guidance gives intervals of 6 months for lifting accessories and for equipment used to lift people, and 12 months for other lifting equipment, unless an examination scheme drawn up by a competent person specifies different intervals. A repair is not a substitute for that examination.
