Hydraulic hose repair cost: what you are paying for

Hoses are the cheapest thing on a hydraulic machine to replace and the most expensive thing to get wrong. Here is what a hose quote is made of.
A hose repair is three separate costs
- The assembly
- Hose by the metre, plus two fittings, crimped to length. Price follows the bore, the pressure rating, the number of wire braids or spirals, and the fitting type. A four-spiral high pressure hose with heavy duty flanged ends is not the same product as a low pressure return line, even if they look similar.
- Getting to it
- The hose itself is often the small part. Time is spent removing guards, panels, or another hose to reach the failed one, and cleaning up spilled oil. A buried hose on a loader boom can be an hour before anything is undone.
- The visit
- If the machine cannot move, an engineer and a van with hose and fittings on board come to you, which carries travel and a callout element. If you can drop the old hose in to a counter, you pay for the assembly and very little else.
Take the old hose off yourself if you safely can
The cheapest hydraulic hose repair in the country is the one where you isolate the machine, remove the failed hose and take it to a counter to be matched and made up. That removes the callout and most of the labour. It is only sensible if you can do it safely: hydraulic systems store energy, and stored pressure can injure long after the engine is off. Depressurise, support anything held up by a ram, and if you are not sure, get the engineer out.
Isolating work equipment from all power sources, and the HSE specifically names hydraulic energy alongside electrical, pneumatic and gravitational energy, is part of what PUWER 1998 requires of employers (HSE). Fluid injection injuries from a pinhole leak are a surgical emergency and are the reason nobody in the trade runs a hand down a pressurised line looking for the leak.
Spec matters more than price
- Pressure rating. A replacement rated below the original will fail, usually sooner and usually somewhere worse. Ask the supplier to confirm the assembly meets or exceeds the original rating.
- Fitting type. BSP, JIC, ORFS and metric ports are not interchangeable, and forcing a near-fit is how a weep starts.
- Length and routing. Too short and it strains at full extension; too long and it chafes on the boom. A hose that rubs through in six months is not a cheap hose.
- Protection. Sleeving or spring guard on hoses that rub or sit near heat is a small cost against a repeat failure and another day of downtime.
When one hose goes, look at its neighbours
Hoses on the same machine tend to be the same age, in the same heat, doing the same cycles. When one lets go, the ones beside it are usually close behind. Replacing a group during a single planned stop costs less in total than three separate breakdowns, because you pay the access time and the visit once. Ask the engineer, while they are there, which others are cracked, weeping, rubbed or ballooning.
How often should hydraulic hoses be replaced?
There is no statutory replacement interval for hydraulic hoses in UK law, and it is worth saying that plainly because a lot of pages imply there is one. What the law requires is that the equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair. In practice that means replacement is driven by condition and by the machine manufacturer's own guidance: outer cover cracking or chafed through to the braid, weeping at the crimp, kinks, blistering, corroded fittings, or any hose past the interval the maker specifies for the duty.
